For wine lovers, today — Château Latour release day — is the real Christmas morning
The day, always big, is extra special this year, as the 2019 vintage struts into the market with the air of a blockbuster, bearing not one but two 100-point scores.
The critics judged the 2019 vintage in Bordeaux to be outstanding across the board, with wines of finesse, elegance, and charm ... and Latour has crafted one of the unquestioned stars of the class.
And a well-preserved star, at that: all bottles have been kept in pristine condition, in the legendary cellars of Latour, and come proof-tagged for authentication.
And just to be perfectly clear, folks: this is the first time these bottles are leaving those cellars.
In her paean to perfection, Lisa Perrotti-Brown called it a wine that “comes barreling out of the glass,” with a "medium to full-bodied palate” that is "exquisitely constructed with a myriad of very fine layers, supported by ripe, grainy tannins and beautiful tension, finishing epically long and mineral-laced.”
Jeb Dunnuck was equally enamored, declaring it “another perfect wine in the vintage and is as prodigious as they come ... [F]lawless, balanced, structured, insanely good …”
In our recent tasting, we were blown away by its combination of power and grace, and the way it integrates its array of characteristics, holding them in perfect balance.
The Latour team (technical director Hélène Génin and CEO Frédéric Engerer) have built this edition of Latour from, primarily, Cabernet Sauvignon (92.5%), with Merlot making up the rest of the blend.
The 2020 Les Forts de Latour, the estate’s “second wine," is more Merlot-forward, with the varietal accounting for slightly more than 1/4 of the blend.
Perrotti-Brown adored it, singling out, in her 95-point rave, its "loads of vibrant black fruit, "earthy layers," "firm, grainy backbone," and "long" finish with a "compelling lift."
All in all, another feather of a vintage for a property that collects them like candy.
And this release stands, surely, among the greatest of this century.
