2014 Teso La Monja

Spain > Toro
Pre-Arrival: August 2018
98 Points: From a cooler, balanced vintage in the Toro region, the 2014 Teso la Monja is cut from the same cloth as the ’13 and is a borderline perfect wine. As with the ’13, this cuvée comes from a single vintage that was planted in 1880. It’s completely destemmed (by hand, not mechanically), fermented in a mix of open-top wood tanks and concrete eggs, and aged 24 months in new French oak barrels. It offers an opulent, sexy, seamless style and is much more approachable and elegant compared to the backward, brooding 2013. Offering a heavenly bouquet of blueberries, smoked plums, mulled spices, and chocolate, this massive red just glides across the palate with a weightless mouthfeel, no hard edges, and incredible purity. It’s already hard to resist yet I suspect will keep for 3-4 decades.
