SMALL PRODUCER SERIES:
DESPAGNE

BORDEAUX, FRANCE

The Despagne family, now in its 7th generation in Bordeaux and helmed by François Despagne, might not be a big name, but their wines speak with authority.

If tradition is king at Despagne, terroir is queen. These are foundational wines, built quite literally from the ground up from old vines (the majority of them over 40 years, with some nearly 100 years) planted in an optimal soil mix of clay, sandstone, and iron, and farmed entirely organically, using many of the same methods that the family has employed for more than two centuries. Despagne’s ancestors farmed the land at Château Cheval Blanc, and, several decades after the French Revolution, scraped together enough money to purchase a small, grape-growing parcel in Saint-Emilion, setting the family on its present course.

As we all know, family-owned and -operated estates are a dwindling crop in Bordeaux, and for that reason, we all need to sing out and support them. What they embody is more than tradition and pedigree: it’s the very notion of wine as a poetical labor of love handed down through the generations.

You can taste it in every bottle we’ve curated for you. More than simply “good” wines, these are wines of character, soul, and proportionality, and they are among the most undersung in all of Bordeaux.
