LANSON, NOBLE CHAMPAGNE
CHAMPAGNE, FRANCE 1978-2000

Lanson Noble has opened the vault to us, folks.

Which, for lovers of Champagne, particularly aged Champagne — in our book, among the finest wines in all the world — is a little like saying Fort Knox has made available the contents of its famed, subterranean safe.

We’ve got more than 30 bottlings here, both Grand Cru Brut and Blanc de Blancs, spanning nearly five decades, from the nearly-quarter century from 1978 to 2000. The 1978 and 1979, now nearly 47 years old, are the stuff of legend.

White wines and Champagnes seldom command the kind of scores that red wines do, but you’ll note that a good number of these vintages captured the critics. The 1979 earned 98 points from Decanter, along with some justly soaring words in a recent reassessment: “complex, simmering flavors … still gliding on a gently, bubbly texture while serving up intense, complex refreshment." The 1988 and 1989 — two of the greatest back-to-back vintages Champagne has produced in living memory — both took home 98 points

Some older wines are, essentially, museum pieces: bottles you break out when you want to impress a guest with the scope and reach of your collection. These are far, far from that. They are wines that are not just still going strong, but at the exquisite peak of what extended aging can do.

What makes Noble Cuvée worth understanding, and worth acquiring, is Lanson's proud and stubborn commitment to making Champagne the way it was originally made. Malolactic fermentation is the shortcut most houses take to soften their wines and make them more immediately approachable. But Lanson refuses. The result is a crystalline purity and a structural backbone that allows these wines to age not merely well and gracefully but triumphantly.

Founded in Reims in 1760, Lanson has been the official Champagne of the British Royal Family and of Wimbledon for decades: not because of marketing, but because of a rigorous standard that has outlasted empires, revolutions, and the vicissitudes of fashion. When the Eiffel Tower debuted in 1889, it was Lanson's 1883 vintage that officials popped open to make the toast.

We can’t wait for you to taste the magic of these back-vintage beauties, which will ratify any occasion or event.

Just remember, though, that quantities are extremely limited, and Champagne tends to go quickly around here. So act now to secure them.
