ITALIAN MARKETPLACE

There's so much variety and depth to the wines coming out of Italy that it's impossible to try to characterize them broadly. But one thing we can say, and without question, is that Italian wine is both eminently versatile and deeply crowd-pleasing. You can pop open a bottle and enjoy it with a blowout, multi-course tasting menu, or pair it with a pizza. And you can rest assured that nearly any good bottle is going to find fans at your party or table.

The only question is – and really, it's the age-old question when it comes to all wine: how do I get my hands on the good stuff?

To help make that task easier, we've curated this four-week Italian Marketplace – a selection of some of the best Barolos, Brunellos, Super Tuscans, Chianti Classicos, and Etna Rossos that are out there.

Typically, we've brought these bottles to you one at a time, not long after we’ve secured possession of them. We're not scrapping that format, don't worry, but lately we've been thinking it might be fun for you to be able to spend some time browsing our well-stocked e-shelves and seeing what catches your eye.

The many highlights include:

  • a 2016 Batzella Bolgheri Superiore Tam, from one of our favorite producers in all of Italy, and one of the leading lights of Bolgheri, which Forbes has justly hailed for its "rate of excellence." In our estimation, there's no finer introduction to the region than Batzella, which exemplifies all the character and charm this exalted patch of earth possesses. Located on the Tuscan coast, just south of Livorno, the microclimate and soil are uncannily similar to that of the left bank of Bordeaux. Cabernet varietals thrive, and this one is big, brooding, and complex, while also bringing soft tannins and gentle acidity
  • a 2015 Terralsole Brunello di Montalcino DOCG "Be Happy," which James Suckling, in a 94-point review, called "round and juicy with a flavorful finish." Crafted by the brilliant Mario Bollag, who is part of a thrilling new wave of Italian winemakers who have embraced recent technologies to bring greater precision and depth to their wines, while always maintaining a proper regard and even reverence for tradition. This duality is on dazzling display in this bottling, from the excellent 2015 vintage

  •  a 2018 Mauro Sebaste Barolo Cerretta, which, at a time when prices for this prized varietal have skyrocketed in price, represents one of the few remaining Barolo values. Sourced from the small commune of Serralunga d’Alba, it is a striking departure from the typical profile of this vineyard's wines, being more elegant than lush, with a marvelous sense of balance that will enable it to age well, and for many years. In other words, a Barolo in the classic style, right down to the long finish

I should note that all of these bottles, and more, are currently in our possession, which means you can expect to have them at your store within 8-12 weeks.

Finally, keep an eye on this space, as we'll be launching more Marketplaces in the coming weeks and months, bringing you more of the best of the best ... and at the very best prices.
