The Story: There is legacy, and then there is legacy. Jean Monnier & Fils began making wine in Meursault nearly a half-century before the U.S. was born. But if you think that's impressive, consider this: Nicolas Monnier, whose expert hands pilot the estate, is the 16th-generation of Monnier in the wine trade. Continuity often goes hand in hand with superior terroir, and that is exactly the case here. The 17 hectares are planted with old vines that range between 25 and 60 years, and the Monniers, as they always have done, espouse a largely hands-off stance in both the vineyard and the cellar. Farming is environmentally-friendly and harvesting is done only by hand – throwback methods that also tend to keep yields low. In the cellar, only natural fermentations are used, and minimal intervention is the overriding philosophy, the better to allow the terroir of each parcel or vineyard to shine. The Monniers also own a monopole in Pommard, Clos de Cîteaux, located within the famed Les Epenots vineyard – and from which the powerful, velvety Pommard 1er Cru Grand Epenots Monopole was sourced.
