DOMAINE BOYER MARKETPLACE
Why Buy: Our recent tasting through the portfolio of this 5th-generation winemaker, we brought back 11 bottles for your consideration (including three Grands Crus and three 1er Crus), and think you'll agree with us that Maison Gérard Boyer is an unsung star that deserves to be more widely known. Then again, maybe better to keep it a trade secret, so that these stellar wines remain the exceptional values they've always been.
The Story: Located mainly in Côte de Beaune, in the communes of Meursault, Auxey-Duresses, Chorey-les-Beaune, Savigny-les-Beaune, and Gevrey Chambertin, Boyer is a throwback to the small houses of old, and to the winemaking that was typical nearly a century ago. Today, Jean Boyer oversees the 7 hectares, having taken over daily operations from his father Gérard, and what you will find in his wines is what you would have found, twenty and thirty years ago in père Boyer's: a passionate respect for the land, a steadfast devotion to the timeworn methods of old, and a fierce commitment to bringing forth the terroir in each vintage. After harvest, the grapes are fermented in cement vats, to preserve their natural character, and the wines are raised in oak barrels. These are wines that speak, foremost, of place, and that, at a time when it is becoming harder and harder for some winemakers to resist the standards of an internationalized ideal, refuse to be anything other than the pure, characterful expressions they are.
Our Tasting Notes: To speak more generally of the house style, since to talk about all 11 would tax your patience, what we love about Boyer is the restraint and balance on display, a kind of classicism that stands out all the more against a landscape of wines that attempt to impress with their size and weight. This is elegance of the old-school, and beggars comparison to a prose style that is tight and economical, that does not waste words, but is, for all that, never brittle or lean – that has an earned depth.
Fun Fact: Gérard Boyer is not just a winemaker; he also holds a doctorate in oenology.
