The older magnums are in that magical place now where the fruit has gone secondary and savory, brimming with notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, dried cassis, and that graphite-and-lead-pencil signature that belongs to Lafite alone. The wines of the 2000s bring more flesh and power; the fruit remains bright beneath the structure, but the tannins have turned to silk.
And the young perfect-scorers, the 2015 and 2016 and 2019 vintages, though still, perhaps, decades from their peak, are all showing beautifully right now.
In all of these wines, the Lafite signature is unmistakable: the preference for elegance over force, the calm and almost majestic assurance, the lordly sense of everything in proper proportion.
Lafite was named a First Growth in the famous Classification of 1855, and listed first among them, and has spent the better part of two centuries doing nothing to alter that status.
You’re lucky, if you’re a collector, if you're able to build your cellar around one or two of these masterpiece wines. The prospect of acquiring a baker’s dozen like this is simply otherworldly.
