What They're Saying: "Strap yourselves in for this thrill ride," The Wine Advocate wrote, in its 99-point review of 'L'Extravagant' 2019, calling it a "powerhouse from start to finish." Excitement and power are present in all of these wines. But not just excitement and power. Vinous also singled out the "delicacy and precision of flavor" in the 2020 Sauternes; Decanter also hailed the 2018 vintage for its "silky texture," "soft spices," and deep "complexity"; and Vinous, in its praise of the 2019, made certain to call out its "feeling of weightlessness" and "silky contours [that] extend the finish effortlessly."
The Story: Dubourdieu was Decanter‘s Man of the Year in 2016, a consultant to some of the greatest estates in the world, including Château d’Yquem, Cheval Blanc, and Margaux, and a preeminent oenologist who taught many of the great winemakers of the next generation. He left us in 2016, but his legacy lives on through his sons, Fabrice and Jean-Jacques, who are just as committed to making wines that are distinct, and feel personal – wines that speak in their own, inimitable way. Château Doisy-Daëne, the so-called "Second Growth" founded a hundred years ago, in 1924, is integral in this mission. Its raw materials, if you will, are optimal: limestone soils and vines that are over 40 years old. But many a winemaker has taken these same raw materials and made wines that are only merely good. The Dubourdieu signature is an unerring consistency and precision, the ability, in vintage after vintage, to bring these elements to their absolute, thrilling peak of expression.
Our Tasting Notes: We could go on all day, and night, about these wines, but, for the sake of concision, let us simply say that the Dubourdieus craft wines that walk a tightrope between lushness, concentration, and resonance on the one side, and on the other, acidity, delicacy, and elegance. And did we mention their ecstatic aromatics? We can't wait until we get a chance to take our next sip of one of these wonderful, transportive bottles. And, if we may, a word about that: don't save these for special occasions, much as they seem to be built for it; we urge you to turn to them, rather, when you want to make an ordinary night special.
