2019 BORDEAUX LEGENDS MARKETPLACE
BORDEAUX, FRANCE
The 2019 vintage is, by wide reckoning, an outstanding one, with the great Jancis Robinson going so far as to wonder whether it just might be the "best ever.” After recently tasting through the vintage, our own assessment was very much in line with hers — and so we went right to work to curate a marketplace for you of the best of the best of this incredible vintage.
Thus, our little black book of Bordeaux 2019 … 11 wines that, in their breathtaking complexity and sheer sensual pleasure, capture everything that makes us (and most collectors, too) weak in the knees. We're talking about three 100-pointers (including the quintuple 100-point Château Margaux), one 99-pointer, a 98-pointer, and a potential 98-pointer … the kind of lineup that makes wine auctions into blood sport and turns normally rational people into competitive maniacs.
The critical acclaim for these has been nothing short of rapturous.
Jane Anson awarded 100 points to Château Margaux, calling it "a wine that you sink into... You can sense the velvety texture from the first moment. There is so much density here, and yet each tannin plays its part with skill.” And she was just one among 5 critics who awarded it a perfect score — the kind of universal critical consensus that happens maybe once a decade. The Wine Advocate granted 100 points to Château Lafite Rothschild, and was no less effusive, declaring it "one of the greatest wines produced in Bordeaux this year... an impeccably balanced classic of immense charm and grace” that "rivals the 2010 and 2016 as the greatest Lafite of the decade, and,” it noted, "of those three vintages, it's clearly the most sensual and demonstrative out of the gates.” And here’s Anson again at her most laudatory, writing, of the 100-point Château Canon: this estate "has been taking off over the past few years, and here you see why. Just so much complexity, depth, power, interest ... This buzzes with life, rises above the palate, full of gunsmoke, truffle, raspberry, blueberry, so delicious."
But you can go up and down this roster and find greatness. Like the Château Léoville-Las Cases that The Wine Independent awarded 99 points ("bursts from the glass" with "amazingly fine tannins”), or the 98-point Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion (a "rare mix of power and elegance,” gushed Jeb Dunnuck) plus a potential 98-pointer, two 97-pointers, two 96-pointers, and a 94-pointer that have critics reaching for superlatives at every turn.
We can't wait for you to discover them for yourself. But hurry— we have every expectation that they're going to go quickly. We don’t want you to miss out on a chance to snap up some of the most legendary wines of our time.
