There are wines that set the standard and serve as appellation benchmarks for quality and price. Then there are wines that ignore convention, overachieving in ways that upset the standards and expectations set by those around them. Situated in the humble town of Kremstal, Winzer Krems has managed to create wines that do just that.

One of the oldest wine regions in the world, Austria has been growing vines since 700 B.C. before the Romans arrived. However, always overshadowed by their neighbors, Austrian wines have struggled to truly make it to the forefront of the wine world until this last decade. Now they can be found on almost every restaurant wine list due to their extreme food-pairing capabilities. From Austrian classics such as Wiener Schnitzel to the bold Issan cuisine of northeastern Thailand, these wines can do it all. But not all Austrian wine is created equal. The wines featured today come from two different single vineyards within the Kremstal DAC.

The Kremser Wachtberg Gruner Veltliner is wildly complex, interplaying notes of chartreuse and white pepper against a mineral backbone so electric, it makes us go back to it over and over again. The Kremser Pfaffenberg Riesling comes from old vines rooted in steep terraced slopes overlooking the Wachau river. Harvest is done by hand and the production is minuscule. But don’t be fooled by how approachable and easy to drink these wines are. With deep flavors that can only come from mature vines, balanced by intense minerality and razor-sharp acidity, these are serious wines built for the long run.
