WindRacer might sound like a delicate chime you pick up at a memorabilia shop in a small coastal town, but don't let the name fool you: this is a powerhouse of a winery, one that's putting out world-class wines of distinction and precision. It also remains — for now — one of the great values in all of California.

Last year, Forbes hailed their "small-batch, luxury" Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays made with fruit from "'extreme' viticulture sites in California" — high-elevation sites in Sonoma and Mendocino with rocky, nutrient-poor soils that tend to produce intense, concentrated flavors in the grapes.

Count us as fans, and particularly after a recent tasting of their 2018 vintages: the Skycrest Pinot Noir and the Alexander Mountain Chardonnay, both made in extremely limited quantities, and under the direction of the gifted Shaun Kajiwara, the Vineyard Director for Jackson Family Wines.

We're excited for you to try what so excited us.

But not only us.

Wine Enthusiast awarded the Skycrest Pinot Noir 96 points, calling it "memorable" and singling out its "great fruit concentration, moderate tannins and subtle savory, spicy accents."

It was deeply enamored, too, of the Chardonnay, lavishing praise, in its 93-point rave, on "a weighty midpalate of exceptional texture and richness" and "a palate of creamy intensity and concentration" that finishes in "a bite of brioche."

With special Concierge Family pricing, the Pinot Noir comes in at a best price of just under $68 a bottle — a remarkable value for a wine of this pedigree and rating. The Chardonnay, meanwhile, is a flat-out deal at a best price of just under $50 a bottle.

WindRacer may be a relative upstart in the world of wine, but its founders, both women, are industry pioneers. Barbara Banke, a former land use and constitutional law attorney, is the chair of Jackson Family Wines, while Peggy Furth founded, alongside her husband Fred, launched Chalk Hill Vineyards and Winery. The two previously collaborated on two wine-focused business ventures: WholeVine, which sought to repurpose winery byproducts, and Vine to Bar Chocolate.

The two knew exactly what they wanted when they launched WindRacer: low-yield wines made from carefully selected blocks of grapes. Wines that don't look to fads or commerce for inspiration. Wines that take their sweet time to come to vivid life.

That they have managed to do this, while not attaching the kind of price tags that they could, is nothing short of remarkable.

The smart play is to load up on all the WindRacer you can manage right now, while their ascent is in its infancy. You won't be sorry, I assure you, and (bonus!) you can say that you were there at the start.

But act now to secure yours!
