When we think of WhistlePig — sure, we think of their distinctive and pleasurable bourbons and ryes, but above all we think of their caution-to-the wind daring, the way they just love to try bold, inventive things that probably shouldn’t work but somehow do and make us fall that much more in love with them.
Case in point: a re-mastered release from their venerated Boss Hog Series — the Boss Hog III Bonafide.
Even for a series as special as this one (Whisky Advocate has called it "one of the most collectible annual rye whiskey releases" on the market), this 20 Year rye is a 1 of 1: a true standout, and one deserving of all the anticipatory hype.
We loved it, and rate it among the very best bottles this great brand has ever produced.
How it came to be is a story that captures everything we love about them.
The 3rd Edition of the Boss Hog series, originally released in 2016, was wildly popular, and they could easily have leaned hard on the original concept (a 14-year rye finished in Scotch hogshead casks). But that’s not their m.o.
So, as usual, they went bigger, and reconceived the whole thing. They took the original, finished in Scotch hogsheads, aged it for six additional years, and finished it in casks from Glenmorangie, the Highland vet renowned for its precision and floral grace.
They also kept yields very, very low: one barrel — fewer than 200 bottles in existence.
Let me just say: you’re in for greatness here.
The nose is more matured and poised than the 3rd Edition, and on the palate this is, as the late, great Vin Scully used to say, “a whole new ballgame.” The casking has yielded enormous dividends, most notably in texture (softer, richer) and in expressiveness (the dynamic range feels almost twice as large as the 3rd edition, with greater nuance, shading, and dimension). And the finish is a thing of beauty, long and, unexpectedly, as savory as it is spicy.
Every bottle is hand-bottled, crowned with a platinum pewter pig in the original Boss Hog mold, and NFC-authenticated.
For anyone who collects WhistlePig — for anyone who collects rye — or even just for anyone who appreciates greatness, this is an essential add, and one that will enhance your social life immeasurably.
