WESTLAND DISTILLERY, GARRYANA 6TH EDITION, SINGLE MALT WHISKEY
With the recent surge in demand for American single malt, Whisky Advocate argues that only a handful of names can truly be credited with pioneering the style—and one of them is Seattle-based Westland Distillery. Westland is helping set the bar in whiskey innovation here in the U.S. with a focus on locally grown barley as well as oak and was named World Craft Producer of the Year at the 2016 World Whiskies Awards. It is their flagship whiskey, ‘Garryana,’ that emphasizes maturation in the locally sourced Quercus garryana, the Pacific Northwest’s native oak, and is only released in numbered limited editions—which connoisseurs eagerly await to snap up. As a follow up to their previous 5th Edition, which was awarded Best American Single Malt at this year’s World Whiskies Awards, the 6th Edition has already begun to receive accolades of its own, including Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Today we’re thrilled to offer a micro-allocation (just 450 bottles!) of the new 6th Edition release to our Concierge customers before it has a chance to hit the store shelves.
In production since 2011, Westland Distillery has helped establish the American Single Malt category into a national and international mainstay with their emphasis on local ingredients. With a core range of expressions, including Peated and Sherry, it is their Outpost range of special releases that allow for exploration and innovation. Their Garryana American Single Malt Whisky is part of this lineup, which introduced the world of whiskey to Quercus garryana, or Garry Oak, a very rare and difficult to find wood that only grows in only five percent of its former habitat in the Pacific Northwest. The oak’s very scarce nature makes the whiskey challenging to produce year to year, but ultimately makes it so coveted, with each successive release different than the last. For the 6th Edition, Westland comingles Garry Oak with brandy and sherry casks—including ex-Calvados and ex-Pedro Ximénez barrels. After spending between 35-45 months initially in American oak, the single malt is finished in Pedro Ximénez for an additional 30-38 months. The brandy barrels give the whiskey a brighter lift to the savory spice of the Garry Oak, whereas the Pedro Ximénez provides classic dark fruit and muted sweetness. On the nose there is raspberry reduction, maple candy, dulce de leche and a faint hint of clove, with a palate of cedar, cinnamon, dried apricot, and light caramel. For one week only, or until sold out, this new release of Garryana is available at special Concierge-only pricing. Don’t miss it!
