Why Buy: Gorgeous, gracefully-aged Champagnes – including a massively on-trend Brut Nature and Extra Dry – from one of the great names of the genre, Taittinger. And at a fraction of the cost of what you’d expect to pay. The source? The bespoke label Virginie T. – launched, in 2008, by Virginie Taittinger and her son, Ferdinand Pougatch.

What They're Saying: Wine Enthusiast declared the 94-point Brut Nature Millesime 2009 to be a Champagne that, thanks to its fine aging, expresses "more complex, mature flavors," a "balanced" wine "that remains full of acidity." As for the 93-point Extra Dry Millesime, also from 2009, aging has left it, wrote the WE, "soft," "toasty," and "rich." The publication was just as taken with the Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru, awarding 93 points: "a beautifully balanced" and "richly structured" Champagne, it gushed, "with a dry streak of acidity to share with the white fruits."

The Story: The Taittingers have been in the business for 160 years, a long and storied history that has taught them the enduring principles of a complex, laborious process that time has more than borne out. Chief among these is the importance of aging. Virginie T's grapes are aged for two to three years longer than other Brut champagnes, resulting in a softness, finesse, and nuance that are the envy of the industry, and have made the label one of the most sought-after in the competitive world of bubbly.

The Specs: With its zero dosage and no added sugar, the Brut Nature has an elegant steeliness that makes it perfect for pairing. The Extra Dry, with its fuller body and creaminess, is a crowd-pleaser of a bubbly, ideal for starting a meal or a party. As for Blanc de Blancs, it’s simply one of the great expressions of Chardonnay in the world.

Our Tasting Notes: The two 2009s are marvels of maturity, delivering, on the one hand, all the acidity and purity we hope for in a great Champagne, and, on the other, the distinctive, caressing textures that long aging, at its best, brings. With the Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru, we were struck by the way its richness was balanced by a gentle acidity, and the way its elegance of structure did not take away at all from its fullness and dimension. The Extra Brut is a Champagne to keep around for weekday nights as well as occasions, a well-crafted, highly drinkable wine that elevates nearly anything it goes with.

Fun Fact: An estimated 85% of Virginie T.’s collection consists of Grand Cru Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
