VINCENT & SOPHIE MOREY

BURGUNDY, FRANCE 2022

Why Buy: Worldwide demand for Burgundy has skyrocketed in recent years, so fine, soulful, classic Burgundy for under $100 has become vanishingly hard to find. But we've found it, in the small, hands-on producer Vincent & Sophie Morey: a genuine old-vine Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge (a rarity in its own right) and a Premier Cru Santenay from Beaurepaire, a terrific vineyard on the southern slope near Beaune. We can't wait for you to try these two terroir-focused beauties, from what we think is one of Burgundy's best-kept secrets.

What They're Saying: The venerable Jasper Morris has consistently praised the Moreys' dedication to their craft. In his authoritative Inside Burgundy, he singles out their "careful vineyard work" and notes how their wines "show remarkable precision and purity” — qualities that shine through brilliantly in these 2022 releases.

Our Tasting Notes: The Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge Vielle Vignes offers a brilliant expression of old-vine depth, with aromas of red cherries and forest floor giving way to a palate that balances subtle power with remarkable finesse. The Santenay 1er Cru Beaurepaire, meanwhile, demonstrates why this often-overlooked appellation deserves more attention. There's a wonderful interplay here between bright red fruit and earthy minerality, with perfectly integrated tannins that speak to the Moreys' careful cellar work.

The Specs: Both wines reflect the Moreys' careful approach to winemaking. The old vines for the Chassagne-Montrachet are harvested at optimal ripeness, with yields kept intentionally low. After careful sorting, the grapes undergo traditional vinification with gentle extraction. Both wines see judicious use of oak — enough to support the fruit but never to overwhelm it. The result is wines of remarkable clarity and precision.

The Story: The Morey narrative is as much a love story as it is a wine story. Vincent cut his teeth in Saint-Émilion before returning to his family estate in Chassagne-Montrachet in 1986 - the same year Sophie was completing her first vintage at Domaine Ménager-Belland in Santenay. United by their shared belief that great wine begins in the vineyard, they established their own estate two decades later. Their philosophy is simple but uncompromising: honor the terroir through precise viticulture, and let that meticulous work in the vineyard shine through in the cellar.

What to Pair Them With: The Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge excels in the company of roasted game birds or mushroom-based dishes, while the Santenay shows its best alongside an herb-crusted rack of lamb or a board of ripe, aged cheeses.

Fun Fact: Vincent's cellar, located near the historic Abbaye de Morgeot, represents a unique piece of Burgundian history. While most producers perform bâtonnage (lees stirring) weekly, Vincent has developed his own fortnightly approach, a small but significant detail that helps create his wines' distinctive texture and complexity.

Our Guarantee: Remember, friends – we always buy direct and we only source direct, so you can rest assured that your wine will arrive in your hands with pristine provenance.
