Lafite Rothschild and deal are two words that don't often go together.
But they do today.
Because we're bringing you an extraordinary bottling – the 20th anniversary vintage of the wine that was introduced to celebrate the arrival of Les Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in Chile, the 95-point Los Vascos Valle de Colchagua Le Dix de Los Vascos 2018 – and for an equally exceptional price: just under $65.
It sent James Suckling into uncharacteristic raptures. The critic mooned over its "creamy, melted tannins," its "polish," and its "length."
If you're a lover of old-vine wines, then Le Dix ought to be of particular interest: this bottling was sourced from Los Vascos's exceptional El Fraile vineyard, in the verdant Colchauga Valley, 25 miles from the sea, many parcels of which contain vines that are more than 80 years old.
But this heady, expressive blend (built, primarily, of Cabernet Sauvignon, with a small amount of Syrah for softening) also benefits from the judiciously low yields that winemaker Philippe Rolet insists upon.
I should note that Rolet adheres to the same time-honored methods, here, that Lafite does in producing its legendary Bordeaux Grands Crus. Grapes are hand-selected and de-stemmed, and fermented in stainless steel tanks, with gentle pump-overs that allow for slow, gentle extraction of the tannins. The wine is then aged in French oak (in this case, 60% new oak) for 18 months.
As with Lafite, these are wines that are built to last. The 2018 has the structure, undeniably, for graceful long-aging, and we expect you can cellar it for ten years or more, if you'd like – though, personally, we'd have an awfully hard time waiting that long, given its knockout performance at our recent tasting.
At this price, and with this pedigree, this is one you're going to want to buy by the case. But hurry – our quantities are limited!
