Certain names in the world of wine are not simply synonymous with excellence – they all but amount to guarantees of greatness in the bottle.
Paul Hobbs is one of them.
And so we’re thrilled to report that we have just secured allocations of three extraordinary bottles from his stunning Viña Cobos portfolio, all from 2019, and all critical darlings: their 98-point Malbec Los Arboles Valle de Uco Chañares Estate 2019; their 97-point Malbec Mendoza Cobos Marchiori Vineyard 2019; and their 97-point Malbec Zingaretti Estate 2019.
Hailed by Forbes as "The Steve Jobs of Wine" for his "ardent exactitude" in the vineyard and in the cellar, Hobbs was instrumental to the success of Mondavi's legendary Opus One. Robert Parker named him Wine Personality of the Year – twice. With Viña Cobos, in Argentina, he has topped even himself, in almost single-handedly putting Argentine wine on the world map.
To come across this degree of refinement for less than three figures a bottle is simply remarkable, and speaks to the extraordinary value proposition of these wines.
But they're so much more than just great values. Most Malbecs want to impose themselves upon you with their heft and spice, but Hobbesian Malbecs are a different breed altogether: more fruit-forward and with softer tannins, they dance with finesse and agility, without sacrificing either density or size.
James Suckling raved about the Malbec Los Arboles Valle de Uco Chañares Estate, reveling in its “layers of chewy and polished tannins and a great finish." He was just as enamored of the Malbec Mendoza Cobos Marchiori Vineyard 2019, made with grapes from 60-year-old vines: "Full, rich and round, but with a line of tannins and bright acidity running through the center-palate. Superb finish."
As for the Malbec Zingaretti Estate 2019, meanwhile, it sent Vinous to swooning: "Delicate with finely grained tannins, fresh energy, a complex, nimble flow and a flavorful, languorous, expansive palate," it wrote, in a 97-point paean. "The finish is full of nuance. An outstanding wine."
There you have it, folks: a formidable and thrilling trio of Hobbesian gems.
