The name Paul Hobbs is among the few you can put in that rarefied latter group.

A consultant arguably without rival, he was instrumental to the success of Mondavi's Opus One and Robert Parker twice named him Wine Personality of the Year. And his foundational work with Nicolas Catena Zapata is widely credited with helping to put Argentine winemaking on the map.

It is in no small part because of Hobbs that we pounced on the opportunity to acquire this 99-point beauty from Viña Cobos, their 2018 Chanares Estate Malbec.

And then we had the privilege of opening a bottle and tasting it for ourselves — the privilege of giving ourselves over to a wine of deep craftsmanship, character, and soul.

When we think of Malbec, many of us automatically think of Argentina. More specifically, of Mendoza, where some of the finest Malbecs are produced. But even more specifically, for many of us: of Viña Cobos, whose Malbecs are of an entirely different order of expression, with a degree of refinement that few estates in Mendoza, Argentina, or, really, the New World can match.

James Suckling was just as taken as we were by its depth and dimension. In a review posted earlier this year, he waxed on about its "density and richness ... framed with beautiful, round and polished tannins and a seamless texture. … Goes on for minutes."

If you're accustomed to Malbecs of heft and spice, Hobbs's may surprise you. More fruit-forward and with softer tannins, his Malbecs are striking for their finesse and agility, without losing any of their density and size.

And this one is among the best he has ever crafted in Mendoza, a wine of great opulence, concentration, and structure.

Suckling recommended opening it after 2026, but was quick to note that it is "already great."
