Named one of Decanter’s best Northern Rhône producers in 2019, Vignobles Chirat has a long history within the region—the first harvest was in 1925—and the estate has been attracting even more consumer and critic attention of late. To kick off the new year, we’re offering a lineup of four wines from this classic producer: the amazing value Saint Joseph Rouge ‘Les Côtes,’ a bold, spicy Syrah; Côte-Rôtie ‘La Rose Brune,’ the collector favorite that Jeb Dunnuck calls “straight up delicious”; Condrieu ‘Les Chays,’ a stunning Viognier that Vinous notes as “juicy and concentrated but lively”; and never to be outdone, the domaine’s top white Condrieu ‘Clos Poncins,’ a layered, endlessly complex Vigonier that will stop you in your tracks. For one week, you can collect all four with Concierge mix-and-match pricing up to 28% off. Happy New Year!

The Chirat story began in 1925, when Benoît Chirat harvested his first crop of Syrah on the sun-drenched slopes in the Northern Rhône. Today the house has become equally, if not more, known for their Condrieu Viognier production, which didn’t begin until the 1980s. Benoît’s grandson Gilbert now oversees Vignobles Chirat along with his son Aurélien. Aurélien joined the team in 2012 and his winemaking experience in Burgundy, New Zealand, and the south of France—coupled with a string of excellent vintages since then—has helped bring the estate to new prominence. The estate produces a gorgeous portfolio of reds and whites that span the spectrum stylistically as well as in price—and our lineup today perfectly showcases this range.

The 2019 Saint Joseph ‘Les Côtes’ was harvested entirely by hand and aged 10 months in 20% new oak. A fantastic value, the wine is spicy and ripe with bold red fruit notes and soft tannins. The other red from today’s lineup is the 2017 Côte-Rôtie ‘La Rose Brune,’ the pinnacle of the estate’s reds, sourced entirely from the lieu-dit ‘Côte Rozier’ in Ampuis. After 17 months maturation in French oak (25% new), the wine has taken on powerful notes of licorice, spice, and dark fruit. Wine Spectator notes that many reds from the excellent 2017 vintage “are ripe and seductive”—a report that certainly holds true here. The first of our two whites is the 2018 Condrieu ‘Les Chays,’ 100% Viognier that aged 10 months in oak (15% new). Classic Condrieu, it has a beautifully supple texture with a firm backbone of acidity and notes of brioche, honeysuckle, and ginger. The crème de la crème for the estate’s whites, the 2018 Condrieu ‘Clos Poncins’ comes from the lieu-dit of the same name, a tiny parcel of deep gravelly soils, only about ⅓ of a hectare. The wine aged 10 months in predominantly French oak, with a small portion in stainless steel. The wine boasts a layered profile of apricot, candied orange, and honey and “shows impressive energy and noteworthy definition [and] finishes extremely long and precise” (Decanter). We can’t think of a better way to start the new year—secure your order of all four Chirat wines today!
