WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: Jeb Dunnuck awarded a perfect 100 points to the Unico 2016, noting the producer's own belief that vintages ending in six tend to be exceptional, and calling this bottling "an explosive, full-bodied exploration of dense red fruit, tension, and intensity," with "a tremendous amount of elegance and power vying for equal attention." The Unico Reserva Especial, a blend of wines from 2011, 2012 and 2014, enthralled The Wine Advocate — “magnificent,” it wrote, in a 98-point paean, calling it “sleek, polished, and elegant, with fine-grained tannins." The Valbuena 5 2021 also took home 98 points, with James Suckling calling it "one of the finest Valbuenas available," praising tannins that are "huge, yet incredibly refined and polished" and an "exceptionally long finish.”
OUR TASTING NOTES: Tasting through a Vega Sicilia lineup is always a treat, and though we are no longer surprised when we encounter greatness, we are, all the same, impressed by the individuation that they bring to each wine, their specific tailoring. The Unico 2016 is the headliner and it plays the part beautifully, with dense red fruit unfurling in waves, and tension and generosity trading lines back and forth, like two actors who listen to one another, and with great sensitivity. A decade of patient aging shows in every sip: nothing feels rushed or raw; everything is brought to resolution. The Reserva Especial occupies a slightly different register; it’s more contemplative, with layers of spice and dark fruit that build and build, as opposing to coming on strong and all at once. Valbuena 5 is the powerhouse of the group. It abounds in blackberry and graphite, with just a faint whisper of sandalwood, and the tannins are so substantial that you’re sure they’ll overwhelm the experience. But they never do. Nothing does. No one element predominates. A simply brilliant performance. The Macan Rioja is perhaps the wine that will surprise people the most, particularly those who are certain as to what a Rioja is supposed to taste like. It’s brighter, and more aromatic, with red berries and dried herb dipping and dancing around a core of well-integrated oak. Pintia brings the muscle: it’s got more oomph and density than either of its Ribera or Rioja siblings, and though it’ll last you a while, it's generous enough, and easy-going enough to pour right away. And last but not least: Alion, the estate's more modern-leaning expression, which neatly (and quite wonderfully) rides the line between power and polish, and that balance is what makes it indubitably hard to resist.
THE STORY: In our instant-gratification world, Vega Sicilia operates on a different plane entirely, as if it belonged to another time. Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who founded the estate, in 1864, didn't set out just to make good Spanish wine; his aim was nothing less than to rival Bordeaux's greatest châteaux. Chaves's audacious strategy was to plant native Tinto Fino alongside imported Bordeaux varieties, creating a fusion that would become the estate's signature. But perhaps the most important decision he made was to be patient. While other producers rushed their wines to market, Vega Sicilia embraced practices that seemed almost perverse at the time. Consider the flagship Unico, which spends a full decade maturing before release: five years in barrel and vat, then another five in bottle. Holding a wine back for this long would break the back of most wineries. Here, it’s simply standard operating procedure.
THE SPECS: The Unico 2016 spent 10 years maturing: five years in barrel and vat, and another five in bottle. The Reserva Especial is a multi-vintage blend, released only after more than a decade of collective development across its component years. Valbuena 5, the estate's other flagship, sees a shorter aging arc than Unico but no less exacting attention. The Macan project reflects Vega Sicilia's Rioja collaboration with the Rothschild family; it was aged for 14-16 months in a combination of French and American oak. Pintia, from Toro, ferments in stainless steel and oak before maturing largely in barrels and foudres with 75% new oak. Alion represents the estate's more contemporary Ribera del Duero expression, though, it, too, was aged with the same standard of rigor that we find in the entire portfolio.
FUN FACT: The name Vega Sicilia seems to suggest an Italian connection, and there have been legends that a Sicilian saint is part of the long-ago history. In fact, though, the name derives from a local chapel dedicated to Saint Cecilia.
