VALDRINAL, QUINTANA DE CUE, RESERVA
RIBERA DEL DUERO, SPAIN 2011
Although Ribera de Duero's most iconic producer, Vega Sicilia, has been making some of Spain's most renowned wines since the mid-19th century, the region didn't begin to truly take off until the 1980s. With Vega Sicilia's stronghold in the western half of the region, wineries such as Valdrinal, Pesquera and other highly skilled and passionate growers were able to stretch their legs and bring the quality of their wines to another level in the east. In the process, they've continued to further enhance the prestige of this elite wine growing region. This focus and innovation led to Wine Enthusiast naming Ribera del Duero "Wine Region of the Year" in 2012, thanks to up and coming stars like Valdrinal, whose portfolio includes highly rated, yet approachable wines that don't break the bank - perfect for a "Roll out the Barrel" offer. It is their 2011 Quintana de Cue Reserva, an homage to family and a 92-point stunner, that we are elated to offer you today.
Started by David Cueller in 2000 with enologist Ignacio de Miguel, a disciple of Michel Rolland, Valdrinal is 25 hectares of vineyards in the heart of the appellation around the town of Aranda de Duero with an average vine age of 30 years. Cueller, whose grandparents were the first of his family to settle in the area, has since brought on enologist Isaac Fernandez Montana to help manage and direct his vision of high quality, 100% Tempranillo reds, with the wines of Quintana de Cue produced in honor of his family's roots in Ribera del Duero. The vineyard's rocky terraces, with its combination of tertiary sediments including sand, limestone and chalk, and the mild continental climate with extreme heat during the summer are perfect for Tempranillo, locally known as Tinto Fino, creating wines with depth and balance. The grapes are harvested manually and are aged mostly in French oak, with the Reserva seeing 18 months of oak aging, surpassing the 12-month labeling requirement.
Ribera del Duero enjoyed a warm summer in 2011, resulting in powerful wines with early accessibility and the Quintana de Cue Reserva exemplifies the vintage. Deep ruby in color, this expression of Tempranillo stands out for its balance of bountiful fruit and structure, including approachable tannins and lively acidity. Secondary flavors of tobacco and earth have really begun to show, and a nice minerality adds to a complexity that overdelivers for its price point. For one week only, we're offering 6 or 12 packs of up to 25% percent off, so don't miss your chance at our "Roll out the Barrel" offer on this striking style from Ribera del Duero!
