The 100-point score is as rare as it is coveted, and many great wines will never achieve that critically acclaimed “perfection” (or as close to perfection as exists!). If you are Brunello di Montalcino’s Valdicava, however, you collect these 100-point scores with astounding frequency—the winery’s highly anticipated first release of the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino ‘Montosoli,’ was recently awarded 100 points, making for a quartet of 100-point Valdicava wines over the past two decades. As one of the most esteemed crus within Montalcino, Montosoli has long been regarded as a primary source for excellent Brunellos, with many producers using fruit from this area for their top labels. As such, we expected Valdicava would produce an incredible wine from this pristine cru, but we were still blown away. Stellar scores aside, the wines of Valdicava are unquestionably iconic, and a genuine display of the greatness of Brunello di Montalcino. Working with the best grapes from nine different single vineyards, their 99-point 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is a benchmark Brunello expression in itself, boasting floral and spice aromas that lead into powerful flavors of raspberry, plum, truffle, and earth. It is undoubtedly a hard act to follow, but the first release of the single-cru ‘Montosoli’ is awe-inspiring in its complexity and finesse: it’s full bodied but incredibly refined, with impeccably integrated tannins and a decadent profile of dark fruit, earth, and oak spice. Of course, this is one that’s built to age, if you can resist, especially in magnum format—the only size the winery produced.
