Etna Bianco and Etna Rosso

At nearly 11,000 feet high, Mount Etna is mainland Europe’s largest and most active volcano, producing some of the most exciting wines that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. These distinct, high quality, mineral-driven wines from exceptional terroir have defined Etna’s rising star, and today’s offer of Tornatore’s 2016 Etna Bianco and Etna Rosso showcases the intriguing allure of their most ancient cultivars. Etna Rosso is a blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, while Etna Bianco is based on the local Carricante grape. Marked by its distinctive lemony minerality and capacity to age, this white absolutely goes toe to toe with the world’s best whites, while Etna Rosso is reminiscent of Burgundy-like elegance paired with Barolo-like complexity. Hands down, these are some of Italy’s most intriguing wines being produced today, and any wine lover would be doing themselves a disservice if they missed out on them.

Justifiably among the finest of Etna’s new releases are the wines of Tornatore. Ranked as one of Wine Enthusiast’s Top Wines of 2017 with the 2016 single vineyard receiving the distinction of Editor’s Choice, we jumped at the opportunity to highlight the exhilarating wines of this benchmark Etna estate. Not only are they one of the pioneering voices coming out of one of Italy’s hottest wines areas, their debut in the US market is just beginning. Though they have been recently introduced into the US wine scene, the Tornatore family is by no means new to wine. Records show that the family has lived in the area since the mid-1600s and agriculture runs in their blood. For centuries they have cultivated olives and hazelnut groves and in 1865, Francesco Tornatore delved into the world of wine. Based in the picturesque town of Castiglione di Sicilia, their 60 hectare estate lies at 621 meters above sea level and their multi-generational knowledge of Etna’s intricacies have aided them in finding the best sites on the volcano’s northern slopes. With vineyards ranging from 1,800 to 2,300 feet above sea level, they have developed the largest single vineyard in the Etna DOC using abandoned ground recovered from one of the volcano’s lava flows and continue to make significant investment into the improvement of their Mount Etna estate. Their meticulous vineyard management and winemaking techniques allow the distinct character of their exceptional vineyard sites to shine through. As these wines are just starting to debut in the market, there is a limited amount of wine allocated to us, and they will not be available in our stores.
