TOMMASI FAMILY ESTATES, 'PALANCA'
Amarone is easily one of the most distinctive wine styles produced today. Among the few iconic producers of this iconic wine, Tommasi Family Estates stands near front and center. While the estate has become a benchmark for classic Amarone, they’re by no means a one-trick pony; they have expanded into multiple Italian regions and produce a wide range of styles. Their top labels can command prices in the triple digits, so we jumped at the opportunity to offer a lineup from Tommasi’s new project named in honor of the estate’s founding father, ‘Palanca’—a brand that brings all the know-how of a century-old producer, but without the hefty price tag. Today’s trio showcases the diversity of styles Italy’s Veneto produces, and Concierge Mix & Match pricing up to 25% off calls for stocking up!
The Tommasi estate was established in 1902 around the family home in Pedemonte in Valpolicella, and over the years the winery has expanded into premier areas of the region under the guidance of the four generations of Tommasi family. Today, the family owns a total of 1,400 acres between the Veneto, Tuscany, Puglia, Basilicata, and Oltrepo Pavese. Terroir always comes first, and Tommasi has become known for their classic approach that favors elegance and balance, with deep fruit profiles complemented by spicy, earthy flavors.
Today’s 2017 Palanca Ripasso Valpolicella, 70% Corvina and 30% Rondinella, was sourced from the Tommasi family’s own vineyards in the hilly zone of Valpolicella Classico. The unique double fermentation with spent Amarone pomace has led to a wine with an intense nose of ripe cherry fruit, complemented by notes of spice and purple flowers. The 2017 Rosso Trevenezie is a blend of 60% Corvina, 30% Rondinella, and 10% Merlot. The Tommasi team partially dried 10% of the grapes for 30 days, which were then blended with fresh grapes prior to fermentation. This is a juicy, spicy red boasting a profile of crushed raspberry, black cherry, and plum compote. The 2019 Lugana is 100% Turbiana (a rare local variety), sourced from the estate San Martino della Battaglia within the appellation. This is a beautiful wine, leaping from the glass with aromas of white flowers, peaches, and citrus. The flavors carry through to the palate, with notes of yellow apple and honey on the long finish. Each of today’s wines far over deliver their modest prices—this is a trio that is simply not to be missed!
