This is the Napa Cab you dream of. And believe me when I tell you: its 99 point score isn't even the most impressive thing about it.
It was made by the great Andy Erickson, from 100% Mondavi Heritage Clone 31 grapes, which are famous for being so stinting in their yields. You know Erickson. He's one of the preeminent winemakers of his generation, revered especially for his legendary stints at Screaming Eagle and Harlan.
At To Kalon Vineyard Co., owned by the company that oversees Robert Mondavi Winery, his task is to produce the most terroir-centric wines possible from the To Kalon vineyard, one of the most renowned and revered parcels of land in all of California. And (and just as important) to limit the production for each vintage, the better to achieve the kind of precision and depth he demands.
In hanging a near-perfect score on the 2021 vintage, James Suckling called it a wine of "massive concentration" and "fine-grained tannins," with "intense" notes of "blueberry, dark chocolate, graphite and tobacco leaf."
We found this to be big and bold, full of intensity and drive, and with a runway length finish. The kind of wine that, for all its size, keeps changing in the glass as you sit with it, inspiring new thoughts ... not just about the wine, but about life.
