THIBAULT LIGER-BELAIR

BURGUNDY, FRANCE  2022

If you've yet to explore the wines of this emerging star of Burgundy, you're missing out.

Wine Anorak has dubbed Thibault Liger-Belair a "new classic," and the three bottles we've curated from their 2022 portfolio sing with the purity, definition, and incomparable old-school soul that have endeared us and so many others to this house-on-the-rise. Snap these up and thank us later.

They say the devil is in the details — well, so is great wine. When Thibault Liger-Belair took over the controls of this historic property, in 2001, he rebuilt it from the ground (literally the ground) up, and worked tirelessly to reform the winemaking operation, bringing it into the present by reviving the values of the past.

This is an all-organic, terroir-fanatical house that makes wines of extraordinary character and distinction, with the idiosyncrasies and surprises that a generation of wine consultants has abjured (and for which the lucrative international market seems to have little patience).

What we're offering here spans Burgundy's hierarchy beautifully:

   * a Gevrey-Chambertin En Créot at $135 that delivers the appellation's classic character, and with stunning depth

   * a Chambolle-Musigny Villages at $195 that conveys that commune's signature elegance with effortless grace

   * and the crown jewel, a 95-point Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Aux Charmes; sourced from the Aux Charmes climat, right next to Chambertin itself, it is, wrote Decanter, "fresh, sappy and very aromatic, with subtle wood, some clove and white pepper spice and good underlying minerality and tension”

What you’re buying, when you buy Thibault Liger-Belair is much more than bottles, though. You’re buying history, continuity, terroir.

Located in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the estate dates back to 1720, with vines that have been in the Liger-Belair family since the 18th century. But when Thibault took over, those old vines were struggling: compacted soil, neglected care, squandered potential. He converted to organic farming in 2004, instituted a policy of strict hand-harvesting, and slow-pressed every grape. The goal, as he told Wine Anorak, was "terroir purity and focus." He wanted his wines to become "very straight, like a crystallization of the wine."

That crystallization shows up in every bottle. The Grand Cru is typical of Thibault Liger-Belair's commitment to whole-bunch fermentation (70%, with central stems removed) and judicious use of new oak (100% for this top wine). The result is neither overworked nor over-extracted, in an attempt to win over lovers of big and bold. This is Burgundy that tastes like itself, with all the complexity and subtle power that implies.

That, as we all know, is becoming more and more rare.

And so is this:

Thibault Liger-Belair is one person's vision, executed with the kind of obsessive attention that makes each bottle feel like a communication from one soul to another.

Our allocation of these is unfortunately limited, so best to hop on these STAT, folks.

Depth, nuance, that ineffable sense of place: they have it all, and you’ll revel in their marvelous ability to slow you down and focus.

Don't sleep on this one. Secure your bottles today.
