THE SHIN 15 YEAR SHERRY CASK PURE MALT WHISKY
OKINAWA, JAPAN
WHY BUY:
This small-batch, 15-year pure malt whisky benefits handsomely from a rare two-step maturation. Initially aged for 12 years in a selection of American white oak hogsheads and ex-bourbon casks, the whisky was given an additional three years of finish in first-fill oloroso sherry casks and then set to rest in the subtropical climate of Okinawa Island. That finishing is everything here: the warm climate accelerated the aging process, turbo-charging the liquid into something that's mature beyond even its considerable years.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:
A previous iteration, The Shin 15 Year, earned a Gold medal (95 points) at the 2021 Melbourne International Spirits Competition, then achieved Double Gold (100 points) in 2023.
OUR TASTING NOTES:
Something's different here, and right from the first nosing: this isn't playing by the usual rules of restraint and subtlety that tend to govern Japanese whisky. The dark berry presence conveys a real sense of character and heft, and then along comes a strong note of citrus, slicing through with unexpected sharpness, followed by gorgeous, lingering hints of honey and spice, courtesy of its long stint in those sherry casks. The palate has a concentration that fifteen years in Scotland couldn't deliver. The chocolate runs darker than expected, working with caramelized plum in ways that avoid obvious sweetness. The oak is unmistakable, but also subtle, providing structure without nudging out the fruit. The finish traces its own arc, moving through oak, citrus, and spice, but in such a seamless, integrated way that you’re not given to teasing out all the elements; you simply revel. An achievement of a whisky, truly.
THE STORY:
Okinawa presents an interesting problem for whisky purists: how do you make serious whisky in a place that the climate suggests you shouldn't? The Masahiro Distillery has been working on this puzzle since 1883, long before anyone cared about Japanese whisky at all. Working with conditions that would horrify traditionalists (namely, pronounced heat and humidity), these savvy producers have thrived. What they learned over time (and through years of trial and error), is that heat and humidity accelerates maturation in ways that create complexity faster than conventional wisdom allows. Or, to put that another way: fifteen years in Okinawa is not the same thing as fifteen years in a Highland warehouse.
RECOMMENDED USE:
This one is best enjoyed neat, or, perhaps, with a drop or two of water or ice, to coax forth the complex cask finish.
ABV:
40% (80 proof).
FUN FACT:
The name "Shin" translates to "integrity," embodying the samurai principle that guides the entire process.
