Why Buy: The first edition of this limited series was a massive hit that claimed a prestigious Double Gold two years ago at the International Spirits Challenge, and we think this new 21 Year Speyside single malt is actually a step up, being even more refined, mature, and expressive. The porcelain flagons that house these two spirits, adorned with bold, evocative prints from bespoke designer Richard Quinn, make them must-have collectibles.
The Story: Produced at Strathisla Distillery, in Keith, Moray, the oldest working distillery in the Scottish Highlands, Master Blender Sandy Hyslop and the the Royal Salute crew have crafted a whisky that, echoing Quinn's design, manages also to be delicately floral and charming. Strathisla's is not the only whisky in the bottle; it's joined by expressions from Braeval and Caperdonich, as well — regional neighbors whose presence reinforces the Speyside character, accentuating and deepening the characteristic fruit-forwardness that makes for a single malt that’s perfect for those lighter moments, when you don't require a drink to take all the edge off, just enough to mellow you out a bit.
Our Tasting Notes: The nose is vibrant and lively, with notes of exotic fruits (mango, banana) leaping out of the glass, followed by vanilla, fudge, cinnamon, and — lurking in the background — roasted chestnuts. The palate is broad, rich, and fruity, and you'll pick up hints, variously, of strawberry jam, pear, peach, and honey blossom, with developed, but subtle, undertones of chocolate chip and baking spices. The finish is smooth and long, with a welcome whisper of smoke.

Fun Fact: The "royal" in Royal Salute is not a reach for significance; the brand was created to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
