OUR TASTING NOTES: Lean in and let yourself be treated: this is a bravura aromatic performance. Raisin and dark cherry start the show off, then comes a twist of orange peel, red berries, a curl of polished oak, and, loitering somewhere in the back, a touch of chocolate and warm sherry spice. It's a lot, and, well — it's meant to be. The master distiller, Rachel Barrie, built the thing on the two casks that made The GlenDronach's name, Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez, then did something sly and wonderful: she folded in a small run of barrels that had once held Claret. This red-wine ghost in the mix is a brilliant touch. It brightens the fruit, throws a little light into all that darkness, and keeps a rich whisky from turning ponderous. The result reminds us of the best times out with friends: generous, more than touch decadent, and in no hurry whatsoever to call it a night.
THE STORY: The distillery opened in 1826 under the direction of a man named James Allardice, who was, by every available story that's survived him, a spectacular host. He wooed the gentry, worked a room like a man born to it, and threw parties that people were still gossiping about long after the candles guttered. Boynsmill House was his stage, and this bottling raises a glass to both the house and the showman who filled it. Those Claret casks are part of the wink: a nod to the red wine that would have made the rounds at Allardice's table between toasts. Barrie has said that she worked hard to try to capture the feeling of a grand party at a wealthy man’s estate, full of indulgence and luxury at every turn. She has succeeded and then some.
FUN FACT: Barrie reckons that across her three decades in the trade she has nosed something in the neighborhood of 150,000 cask samples, a number she adds to every working day. So those Claret casks that she put to service in the blend here — they didn’t come from some burst of random inspiration; she drew, instead, from a vast olfactory inventory.
