THE DALMORE CASK CURATION SERIES #2

SCOTLAND

Why Buy: Rarity redefined: only 150 sets of this extraordinary trio exist worldwide. The Dalmore Cask Curation 2024 marks the second chapter in the distillery's ambitious 4-year Cask Curation Series, each annual release a testament to the art of barrel aging. This year's edition showcases three exquisitely-matured whiskies, with age statements that will make even the most seasoned collectors catch their breath: 27, 30, and an astounding 43 years old.

Our Tasting Notes: Imagine uncorking a bottle of the 27-year-old. First, the aroma: an overwhelming wave of dried fruits and nutmeg, with an undercurrent of polished oak. On the palate, it's a velvet glove of flavor: rich toffee, dark chocolate, and a hint of orange zest. The 30-year-old ups the ante, offering layers of complexity (think: ripe plums, coffee beans, and a whisper of tobacco) and a movement that unfurls like an epic poem. With the 43-year-old, you’re the lucky beneficiary of four decades of patience. This is a dram of unparalleled depth, each sip a quiet revelation, and with a grand finish that seems to stretch on forever.

The Specs: Each expression starts its journey in American white oak ex-bourbon casks, developing a robust foundation of flavor. Then comes the twist: a finish in Graham's Tawny Port casks. The 27-year-old sees time in Graham's 1997 Single Harvest casks, the 30-year-old in 1994 casks, and the crown jewel 43-year-old luxuriates in rare 1952 Single Harvest casks

The Story: The Dalmore's tale begins in 1839, high in the Scottish Highlands. From day one, this distillery set out to be more than just another maker of Scotch. It aimed to elevate whisky-making to an art form, and in this it succeeded wildly, becoming synonymous with luxury in the whisky world. This commitment to excellence took a dramatic turn in the 1960s, when the great Richard Paterson joined the team and began pushing the boundaries of aging and maturation. Known as "The Nose" for his legendary olfactory skills, Paterson revolutionized The Dalmore's approach to cask management. He pioneered the use of multiple cask types in a single whisky, creating depth and dimension that set new standards in the industry.

Fun Fact: The presentation of the Cask Curation 2024 is a work of art in its own right. The set comes in a bespoke carry case crafted by Italian luggage makers AB Florence. Wrapped in teal green Saffiano leather, it's as much a piece of luxury travel gear as it is a whisky container. And for those who appreciate the finer details, each bottle sports a Saffiano leather neck collar bearing Roman numerals – a subtle nod to the set's limited nature.
