Founded in 1898, the distillery laid dormant for nearly 65 years but has made a remarkable turnaround over the past 15 years: BenRiach was named Distillery of the Year by Malt Advocate in 2007 and was named the Global Whisky Distiller of the Year by the World Whiskies Awards in 2015. Always at the forefront of Scotch innovation, BenRiach has experimented with unconventional (often labor- and time-intensive) practices such as triple distillation, combining peated/unpeated barley, on-site floor malting, and “double cask maturation.” In the process, the distillery has attracted an incredibly loyal following that scoops up limited releases with rapid speed. As enthusiasts and critics expect more artisanal bottles and exceptionalism from their spirits, BenRiach has risen to meet this demand with thrilling single cask collections. Cue today’s BenRiach 2006 Single Malt Cask Bottling, a never-to-be-replicated Single Malt Scotch that’s available only for our Concierge customers. 
 

In 2006, former BenRiach Master Distiller Billy Walker selected a single cask that he believed could evolve a whisky with exceptional character and singularity: a Hogshead barrel that previously held fortified Marsala wine. After aging in BenRiach’s cellar for 13 years, the Single Malt has been bottled at cask strength and left non-chill filtered. Though the spirit is a blockbuster 107.8 proof, it’s like nectar on the palate and the prickle of heat is interwoven into a beautifully complex dram. The initial aromas are reminiscent of pear, caramel, and cinnamon and the flavors on the palate combine nuances of vanilla, toasted hazelnut, and a burnt brown sugar; each of the 240 bottles are hand numbered and are only available through Concierge Sales, making for a genuine collector’s item. This is one for the whisky treasure hunters, so don’t delay in adding a bottle to your back bar before the barrel runs dry!
