TESLA MEZCAL
OAXACA, MEXICO
WHY BUY:
You might not think that a maker of cars and rockets would entertain aspirations of entering the world of mezcal, but this is Tesla, the maverick to put other mavericks to shame. And guess what? They've absolutely nailed it. We’re calling it now: this Concierge-debut release, made in a limited run, is going to become an instant must-have for collectors … and not just for novelty’s sake, or the (of course) one-of-a-kind design (a bottle of black glass in the form of a lightning bolt). This is a superb mezcal, folks: delicate, powerful, floral, fruity, spicy, creamy, smoky, herbaceous ... it has it all. And it's woven together so deftly, and with such aplomb, that you could be forgiven for thinking this is their 30th year of production, not their first time doing this.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:
The Robb Report described it as "an assertive mezcal, with a strong smokiness throughout every sip. There are notes of raisin, pineapple, overripe lime, and some under-ripe stone fruit on the palate, along with equal parts mineral and floral flavors.” The popular site Drink Hacker was hugely impressed, despite initial skepticism: "I really, really like this mezcal. In fact, it's one of the best I've had in recent memory — crisp, versatile, complex, and crushable all at once."
THE STORY:
This isn't Tesla slapping their logo on someone else's work; it's a genuine collaboration that respects craft while bringing their signature obsessiveness to the details. They partnered with Nosotros, one of the most respected names in artisanal mezcal, and together they dove straight into Oaxacan tradition: tahona wheels, alembic stills, everything that has defined the art since the beginning. For the agave, they used Espadín and Bicuishe, two native varietals that bring wildly different personalities to the party. The process they employed is as traditional as it gets, beginning with a tahona mill (a volcanic stone that crushes the piñas) followed by alembic distillation, followed by time. The first release dropped in June and vanished almost immediately. Not long after, the buzz began: this is a super legit bottling.
OUR TASTING NOTES:
The thing that struck us right away is how it refuses to announce itself with aggression despite its assertive character. The nose delivers something wholly unexpected: a note of buttery richness, a touch of brown banana, before pivoting to a sharper citrus profile, with lime leaf, green apple, grapefruit all coming through, and hints of white pepper and nutmeg threading through. The smokiness is there, and it’s definitely not shy, but it's also more subtle than you might guess: more suggestive, if you will, than declarative. On the palate, the story is the creamy texture, with those promised notes of butter and banana giving dimension and depth. At the same time, there’s great balance here: nothing overstays its welcome, nothing comes on too hard, nothing is too much. The finish surprises with its herbal notes, which serve as a kind of palate cleanser after so much velvet richness. Dare we say it: a feat of engineering?
THE BOTTLE:
The hand-blown black glass bottle, designed by Tesla's Director of Product Design, Javier Verdura, takes the form of a lightning bolt. It’s a design inspired partly by Oaxaca's centuries-old Barro Negro pottery-making tradition and partly by Tesla’s aesthetic of boldness.
