TERRALSOLE
TUSCANY, ITALY
Library-release Brunellos aged at the cellar with up to 20 years of bottle age for $75-$140.
No, that's not a typo.
This is why we couldn’t wait to bring you this curated vertical of cellared Brunellos and Brunello Riservas, spanning the 2005 through 2018 vintages and including a number of magnums.
To show you just how undersung Terralsole continues to be.
And just what a great value they remain, at a time when aged Brunellos command a pretty penny.
As we all know, one of the beauties of Brunello is that it becomes more ravishing with age, the exuberant red cherry fruit and mouth-gripping tannins of its youth giving way to seductive notes of dried fig, hazelnut, and sun-baked leather.
Of course, it’s precisely this transformation into supple elegance that makes great ones that much harder for buyers like us to source.
Which is why we didn't think twice when a rare opportunity to acquire this library release became available. And especially after a recent tasting that showed us so much more than we expected.
Sourced from a prime patch of terroir in southern Montalcino, right next door to Biondi Santi (a name inextricably linked to the story of Brunello), these wines have been quietly maturing in the estate’s temperature-controlled cellars, developing all that gorgeous complexity that only time can provide.
Wine Enthusiast called the 95-point 2012 Riserva "smooth, full-bodied and glossy" with a "juicy enveloping palate, and was taken, too, with the 2013 Riserva, with its “enticing” aromas, “full-bodied” palate, and “fine-grained tannins." James Suckling singled out the 2016 Riserva for its “gorgeous” aromas, “layers of ripe fruit and crushed stones,” and “crunchy” tannins. blackberry and blueberry aromas"), wines in both 750ml and magnum formats—all at prices that make absolutely no sense given what the market charges for Brunello with serious bottle age.
These are Brunellos as they ought to be: bold and elegantly structured, and with a distinctive character that can only come from a winemaker's deep and intimate knowledge of place.
They also possess something more, something ineffably rare: a magical quality of transport — capable of delivering you, in an instant, to the idyllic Montalcino countryside, with its rolling, trellised vineyards and caressing sun.
The winemaker, Mario Bollag, builds his wines to last, and in our recent tasting we were struck, again and again, by how beautifully all these wines have matured. None lacks for muscularity, but expert craftsmanship, along with the softening of time, has brought them a marvelous finesse.
And folks, as wonderfully as they have aged already, they have a good bit more life left in them. We anticipate that they will continue to reward you for many, many years to come.
So don't delay and stock your cellar today!
