Another perfect vintage for Sassicaia, folks — with The Wine Advocate going so far as to invoke comparison to the legendary 1985, the bottle that made connoisseurs realize that the greatest Italian wines could go toe-to-toe with first-growth Bordeaux.
Monica Larner, in her 100-point review, marveled at its “immediate joy, richness and complexity” — traits she rightly notes are “rare” for a wine that's usually “famously inscrutable” in its youth.
If you’re counting, that marks the third perfect score for San Guido’s Sassicaia since 2016, a dazzling run of success that has elevated it to the standard for Bolgheri winemaking.

Making this all the more remarkable is that 2023 was marked by brutal cold, relentless rain, and a devastating downy mildew. So what did Tenuta San Guido do? It reduced yields by 20%, doubled down on ruthless selection, and leaned hard on an almost surgical brand of winemaking to produce a strutting, powerful wine that stunned everyone involved. Their general manager, Carlo Paoli, sums up the vintage in three words: “fruit, salinity and length.”
All true, but if anything he's selling their achievement short.
There’s also tremendous aromatic intensity here, a pronounced and lingering minerality, and a textural quality that's hard to pin down and harder to resist, full of tension and mystery.
