Specs: In this Super Tuscan blend, Cabernet Sauvignon is predominant, with Cabernet Franc added for dimensionality. The wine spent 24 months in Slovenian oak.

That's precisely what Italy did for Sassicaia, creating the Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC in 1994, in recognition of the handiwork of Tenuta San Guido in creating such a wine of such distinctive and expressive character. Vintage after vintage, Sassicaia continues to dazzle and delight. Devotees will note that the estate's most recent releases have been marked by longer periods of aging. The result has been even greater depth and complexity, while still retaining the classic Sassicaia characteristics: the purity of fruit, the complex aromas, the gorgeous full-bodiedness ... above all, the vibrancy of expression that reminds you that the wine you're savoring is a living thing, in all its dynamism and mystery.

Our Tasting Notes: Such a beautifully crafted wine. The aromatics are precise and evocative, and the palate walks that tightrope of being rich and almost lush, while at the same time delivering enough tension, acidity, and structure to ensure that you are held in a kind of exquisite balance. All by itself, this would make for a marvelous Sassicaia, but what takes it an exciting step beyond even that is its energy and freshness. This is a wine you'll find yourself returning to again and again — not just in the moment, in reaching for another glass or another sip; but in memory, too.

What to Pair It With: It needs nothing next to it to shine, but will assuredly enhance an osso bucco, braised lamb, or roast duck, or cheese board filled with perfectly ripe, aged cheeses.
