TENUTA LUCE, LA VITE LUCENTE

TUSCANY, ITALY 2018

Super Tuscans are beloved the world over for their crowd-pleasing depth and length, but as connoisseurs and collectors know all too well, the good ones generally require something of an investment. Which is why we’re so keen on Lucente, the bargain label from Tenuta Luce, one of the premier producers in Italy today.

A joint venture between legends Vittorio Frescobaldi and Robert Mondavi, who first met almost thirty years ago, Luce has been helping to set the standard for Super Tuscans for a generation. Lucente is their bid to bring these sumptuous wines to a wider audience, without compromising either the quality or character of the winemaking. As with Luce, all the grapes are sourced in Montalcino, where the nearness of the sea, the gentleness of the sun, and the richness of the soils makes for an almost perfect terroir.

At a price like this, let's face it: you're mostly just hoping for a wine that pleases in being inoffensive and drinkable. But in our tastings, we were struck, again and again, by its purity, a soulful expression of soil and air.

The 2018 vintage is made primarily from Sangiovese (with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot added for rounding and softening), and was matured for a full 12 months in barriques in Tenuta Luce’s cellar before bottling. The growing season in Montalcino was marked by higher than normal rainfall, but summer witnessed an even, regular climate with little rainfall, which contributed to rapid veraison of the grapes. The temperature differences between night and day in September, along with the northern winds, helped to ripen the grapes, which took on magnificent early aromas.

On the nose, you'll find ripe, fresh blackberry, plum and currant and appealing notes of toast and vanilla. The first sip reveals a smooth, enveloping wine that makes good on the promise of all that dark, rich fruit, while lightly teasing you with hints of dried herbs, mocha, and smoke. Its juiciness seduces, but what makes this such a keeper is its subtle tannins, which ensure a soft elegance that carries you through the persistent finish.

Here it is, folks: your table wine for the Fall – ideal with a prime rib or grilled steak or pork chop; buy it by the case, and thank us later.
