Today’s offer features another blockbuster from one of our favorite Montalcino estates, Renieri. Though Montalcino is a Sangiovese paradise, our wine today is a showstopper that is based on Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot - international varieties rarely found planted in this renowned province of Tuscany. Though many say that Cabernet and Merlot can dominate the profile of a wine, owner Marco Bacci took a chance on these less favored varieties almost two decades ago when he opted to plant Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in lieu of the favored Sangiovese grape – and we’re sure glad he did. With vines nearly 20 years old, the character of the 2013 Re di Renieri showcases all of the distinct characteristics of its famed terroir, yet clearly portrays the traits that make it distinctly Renieri. Broad, deep and powerful, yet not a Brunello, it stands in a class of its own. Displaying aromas of “plums, dark currants with hints of licorice and leather” (JS), this is one of our favorite wines of the Renieri lineup. It’s striking ability to showcase rich, ripe fruit with incredible finesse and length, while still remaining completely in balance is a characteristic that continues to strike a chord with us time after time.
As the owner of multiple estates in Tuscany, Marco Bacci has mastered his craft. With each estate showcasing its own style yet celebrating the unique characteristics of each region, this balance is key to Marco Bacci’s vision and has brought the estate to the highest ranks of international wine. The Renieri tenuta in particular is located on the southern side of Montalcino, on slopes that face Monte Amiata (one of the highest peak in southern Tuscany). The vineyards here lie at an elevation of 350-520 meters, with soils that are largely volcanic, consisting of schist, limestone and bed rock, along with the classic reddish terra rossa clay and calcareous tufa soils. With the desire to produce the highest quality grapes, the vines were replanted in 1998 to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, at a density of 6,000 vines per hectare to decrease yields, further increasing the quality of the fruit. And though Renieri is still noted for their incredible Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino produced from the indigenous Sangiovese, Marco has proved that these international varieties have found the perfect home here.
With a love for innovation, Renieri showcases a modern winemaking facility that is almost entirely built underground. Here, all of the fruit is gravity fed into new stainless steel tanks for its initial fermentation, and temperature controlled to protect the delicate yeasts that are present on the grape skins. An automatic pump over system is programmed to cycle so there is just enough extraction to coax out the perfect balance between aroma, flavor and texture of the grapes followed by 3-4 weeks of maceration on the skins. The wine is then transferred to French Allier oak barrique for 15 months and will spend 6 months in bottle prior to release. The 2013 Re di Renieri is the perfect melding of tradition and innovation.
