Why Buy: Hands down, some of the best, most critically-acclaimed table wines you're going to find in the world – at stunningly low prices that ought to have you thinking in terms of cases. Marco Bacci, the power behind the powerhouse producer Tenuta di Renieri (renowned for its 100-point 2015 Brunello and 100-point 2010 Brunello Riserva), combines terroir-driven soulfulness and affordability like few winemakers can. And the 2019 vintage was universally hailed as a gem.

What They're Saying: Gran Selezione represents only 6% of the Chianti Classico output, and Renieri's 93-point 2019 stands in even more elite territory. James Suckling raved over it, calling it "a linear and structured GS from Renieri that feels more like Brunello than Chianti Classico, with all the firm, racy tannins that run through the center-palate of the wine" and a "delicious finish." He was equally enamored of the 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva, a "vibrant and racy" 93-pointer with "tight-grained tannins and crunchy acidity," and "nice, salty undertones." The 92-point 2020 Chianti Classico Tenuta di Renieri, meanwhile, won the critic's admiration for its complex aromatics, "bright acidity," and "flavorful finish."

The Value Proposition: If the Gran Selezione is a flat-out steal at a Concierge Family best price of less than $28 a bottle, the Riserva is a total shocker at less than $20. The Chianti Classico Tenuta di Renieri, at less than $15 a bottle, is roughly the cost of a supermarket wine – but serve it blind and see if it can't fool your friends into thinking it costs two or even three times as much.

The Story: Vital to the quality of expression of Renieri's wines is the estate's soil. Located in the commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga, the 60 acre property is situated on land that could hardly be more optimal for the production of quality wine: predominantly volcanic, with bits of stone and clay in the mix as well, it makes for a rich, complex composition that brings structure and depth to the all-organic wines, as well as a distinctively earthy, minerally character that we turn to this region of Tuscany to find.

Our Tasting Notes: At these prices, it's gob-smacking to encounter the kind of structure we did in the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione and the Chianti Classico Riserva, not to mention the finesse and drinkability. The Chianti Classico Tenuta di Renieri benefitted from nearly an hour of aeration, at which time it showed out as a far more expensive wine than its price tag would suggest, with a fine, savory finish.

Fun Fact: Two years ago, Bacci and Renieri snagged the #1 ranking on Total Wine's Top 20 of 2020, for the estate's excellent Invetro.
