Arcanum is among the most lauded of Super Tuscans, grafting Bordeaux varietals onto old Sangiovese rootstock, and part of what makes their wines so seductive to us is that, year in and year out, they offer one of the highest ratios of quality to price in all of Tuscany.
These two only add to their luster. Decanter, just one of many publications to sing the praises of their 2016 portfolio, awarded the Toscana IGT 98 points and the 'Valadorna' 96 points.

If you’ve yet to acquaint yourself with Arcanum, you're undoubtedly familiar with the work of the winemaker, the great Pierre Seillan, who made his reputation in Sonoma, at Verite, where he crafted a succession of 100-point Bordeaux blends.
His mastery is on full display in these two.
The Toscana is the signature release of the estate, and it takes all of a sip to realize the literal fruits of the optimal growing season in 2016. Aged in 60% new oak, it is a lush expression of Cabernet Franc, with gorgeous aromatics (violets, sage, raspberries, sweet mint, rose, and thyme, among others), subtle spicing, and an unexpectedly long finish that trails hints of white pepper and truffle.
Decanter, in its rave, hailed it as "sleek and concentrated, with ripe, refined tannins and refreshing acidity. A full and tense wine.”
The 'Valadorna' — built from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot — was aged for 12 months in new French oak, and is remarkable for its power and grace. Merlots from Tuscany can sometimes come across as flatter than we would like to see, but not this one — it all but bursts out of the glass with energy and freshness. Combine that with lively acidity, sturdy yet supple tannins, and a rich and sustained finish, and you have a wine to return to, again and again.
