TEN TO ONE X UNCLE NEAREST, BOURBON CASK FINISH LIMITED EDITION, CARIBBEAN DARK RUM

CARIBBEAN

One of the hottest collaborations of winter is here:

Ten to One — winner of ‘Best Rum’ from the LA Spirits Awards, a ‘50 Best Spirits’ award from VinePair, and a veritable trophy case of Gold and Double Gold medals from recent rum competitions — has teamed with Uncle Nearest, the most awarded new American whiskey brand in U.S. history, recipient of more than 150 awards and accolades since its founding in 2017, including a “World’s Best” certification from the World Whiskies Awards two years in a row.

The result of this tantalizing partnership: a Caribbean dark rum finished in Uncle Nearest 1856 whiskey barrels.

We fell for it, hard, and are so happy and fortunate to be able to offer it, for one week only, at an astonishing price of less than $60 per bottle.

We can also think of no more fitting way to kick off Black History Month than to get behind the dynamic duo of  Marc Kwesi-Farrell (Ten To One) and Fawn Weaver (Uncle Nearest), two of the leading Black entrepreneurs in the industry.

Both are shining an important light on the often-ignored contribution of Black makers in the world of spirits and craft.

Inspired by a New York Times article on the origins of Jack Daniel’s, Weaver, an author and businesswoman, launched Uncle Nearest in honor of Nathan “Nearest” Green who, legend had it, taught and mentored a young boy named Jack Daniel in the craft of distilling. The story, later confirmed by the Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey company, makes Nearest Green the first Black master distiller on record. Weaver’s distilling company, launched five years ago in Shelbyville, an hour from Nashville, restores his name.

It would be hard for any company to rival that creation origin, but Ten to One is no less serious in its pursuit of craft perfection. Its flagship Caribbean Dark Rum is a blend of 8-year-old Barbados, Dominican, and Trinidadian column still rums individually aged in ex-Bourbon barrels. The blend is completed with the addition of unaged Jamaican pot still rum.

Pure decadence on its own — but now you age it in Uncle Nearest 1856 whiskey barrels, and what results is a kind of magic: a rum of extraordinary complexity and depth.

In our tastings, we swooned over its nose, a sweet, spicy weave of honey, banana bread, spiced apple, walnut oil, white peppercorn. On the palate, the natural sweetness of the rum is joined by toasted pecan, crème brûlée, and black currant, with a welcome and lingering note of charred wood. The finish is lightly spiced and wonderfully mellow.

Luxury rums have become increasingly hot collectibles over the past few years, and this one — a gorgeous testament to American craft and American history — is certain to join that select company.
