TEANINICH 17 YEAR CASK STRENGTH SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY

HIGHLANDS, SCOTLAND

Why Buy: When a distillery celebrates its 200th anniversary, you'd expect something special. But Teaninich's commemorative, limited-edition 17-year-old release goes beyond special – it's downright historic. Bottled at a head-spinning 111.8 proof, this natural cask strength single malt comes from the last of the original distiller's stocks, made in 1999 before a technological revolution would forever change how Teaninich produces whisky.

Our Tasting Notes: The nose opens like a master patissier's workspace on a busy morning – all honeysuckle, lemon sherbet, and toffee apples, with that characteristic Teaninich grassiness (think Japanese green tea and fresh-cut hay) providing fascinating counterpoint. The palate? Pure decadence: imagine dipping a warm sugar cookie into a pot of fondant cream. A few drops of water transform everything, coaxing out layers of orchard fruits and cream toffee. The finish goes on and on, warming and generous, with spicy oak-wood and white pepper playing off a lingering candied sweetness.

The Story: Founded in 1817 by 'Blind' Captain Hugh Munro, a Napoleonic war hero, Teaninich stands unique among Scottish distilleries. For nearly two centuries, it followed traditional Scottish whisky-making methods, producing spirits of remarkable character and complexity. In 2000, the distillery made history by becoming the only Scottish distillery to use a mash filter press instead of a traditional mash tun – a technological revolution that would forever change its production methods. This anniversary bottling, drawn from stocks laid down in 1999, represents one of the last expressions of old-style Teaninich production. It shows us just how this Highland stalwart earned its reputation for producing whisky of distinctive character and depth.

ABV: 55.9% (111.8 proof).

Fun Fact: Teaninich is unique among Scottish distilleries for using a mash filter press (similar to a giant coffee press) instead of the traditional mash tun – but only since 2000, making this pre-2000 bottling particularly special.
