TAMDHU 21 YEAR SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY
SPEYSIDE, SCOTLAND
WHY BUY:
We’re offering 25% OFF (a full $100 off retail) this superb 21-year-old single malt, the oldest whisky in the core collection of one of the greatest Speyside distilleries the world has ever known. As connoisseurs know, Tamdhu doesn't just finish their spirits in wood — they commit to a full maturation from beginning to end in first-fill sherry casks. And they boast some of the purest water in the industry (drawn from their own natural spring). It’s details like these that have long made them one of the most beloved names in the business, and those details show themselves in every slow sip of this memorably distinctive whisky, now available for the first time in the U.S.
THE STORY:
Tamdhu was universally regarded as one of the world's greatest distilleries when it shuttered in 2010, bowing to outside pressures. Its demise, thankfully, was short-lived. Almost two years later, Ian Macleod Distillers came to the rescue and Tamdhu was afforded a second life. The revived company returned to its roots, recommitting itself to maturing its single malts in 100% sherry casks. The resuscitation of Tamdhu, which last year celebrated its 125th anniversary, has been a boon for Speyside fans, as the storied distiller continues to add to its core range and entice collectors the world over with its distinctive, carefully-crafted drams.
OUR TASTING NOTES:
The nose hits you immediately with a blast of deep sherried oak, but there's great nuance here, too — a waft of chocolate emerges next, followed by hints of sultanas and cinnamon-dusted porridge. The palate is reminiscent, somewhat, of a Jamaican black cake, rich and citrusy and potent, with vivid notes of plump raisins, candied orange and oak. The balance is impressive, and it’s here, especially, that you see the benefit of those hand-selected American and European oak casks, which bring roundness, depth, and a wealth of subtle accents. Many finishes trail into dryness; this one does the opposite, ending, wonderfully, with a controlled, never cloying sweetness.
ABV:
47.5% (95 proof).
FUN FACT:
Tamdhu is the last distillery in all of Scotland that still uses saladin boxes, a French invention that is instrumental in malting barley. Minding the details: that's why we and so many others around the world are such devoted fans.
