The Story: Tamdhu was universally regarded as one of the world's greatest distilleries when it shuttered in 2010, bowing to outside pressures. Its demise, thankfully, was short-lived. Almost two years later, Ian Macleod Distillers came to the rescue and Tamdhu was afforded a second life. The revived company returned to its roots, recommitting itself to maturing its single malts in 100% sherry casks. The resuscitation of Tamdhu, which last year celebrated its 125th anniversary, has been a boon for Speyside fans, as the storied distiller continues to add to its core range and entice collectors the world over with its distinctive, carefully-crafted drams.
Our Tasting Notes: The nose is an alluringly complex mix, with cherry, milk chocolate, rum raisin, baked oats, plums, and citrus all held together in a delicate weave. A tempting start, to be sure, and the experience on the palate more than delivers on that promise, filling the mouth (and, indeed, coating it) with notes of vanilla, brown sugar, red apples, and dried fruits. The finish? Long and warming, and the savory richness carries through in the hints of dried apricots and dates, stewing apples, and soft spices.
ABV: 46.8% (93.6 proof). Un-chill filtered.
What to Pair It With: Ordinarily we don't offer matchmaking suggestions for our single malts, but this one's different: it is an ideal accompaniment to dark chocolate, the richness, nuttiness, and spice playing with and against the sweet, slightly bitter taste of cacao on the tongue.
Fun Fact: Tamdhu is the last distillery in all of Scotland that still uses saladin boxes, a French invention that is instrumental in malting barley.
