TABLAS CREEK, 'THE OVERACHIEVER' GRENACHE BLANC
PASO ROBLES, CALIFORNIA 2020
If you're familiar with the wines of Paso Robles, it's no stretch to say that you probably have Tablas Creek to thank for that.
In 1989, when the Haas family of Vineyard Brands and the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel partnered to launch the winery, Paso Robles was a virtual non-entity. Today, Tablas Creek is among the most renowned in California, the Rhône movement continues to grow, and there isn't a serious wine drinker who doesn't know where Paso Robles is.
Or what its terroir can deliver.
Indeed, what drew these superstar families to a 120-acre tract of land in the foothills of the Sierras was that, with its limestone soils and temperate, Mediterranean-like climate, it bore uncanny similarities with Châteauneuf-du-Pape, from which the Perrin family hails (and from which Tablas still sources some of its grapes).
That land is the foundation of all that Tablas Creek is, and does. So passionate are the families in their belief that winemaking is also caretaking that the winery reached a longstanding goal when it was awarded biodynamic certification in 2016. Last year, it became the first winery in the world to be honored with Regenerative Organic Certification.
An accolade the winery has yet to receive, but one it surely deserves, is for raising the profile of Grenache Blanc.
Widely-planted (it’s foundational in CDP Blanc) but rarely acknowledged, the varietal has proven to be a remarkable success since Tablas Creek introduced it in 1997, with vintage after vintage showing off aromatic, full-bodied wines with good acidity.
We've long been fans—of both the wine and the winery—and couldn't be prouder of this one, which the good folks at Tablas Creek have produced and bottled just for us!
The nose is lush and expressive (you'll pick up hints of lemon curd, sarsaparilla, and mineral brine), and that promise is amply rewarded with a rich and surprisingly creamy wine that, thanks to a strong vein of acidity, steers clear of being cloying. And it keeps your interest all the way through the long, impressive finish, with its appealing little notes of lemongrass and crushed stone.
Tablas calls it "The Overachiever." We call it The Over-deliverer.
See for yourself. And trust us, you'll want to stock up.
