“It would be hard to overestimate the role that Tablas Creek—and its explicit endorsing connection with Château de Beaucastel—played in marking out Paso Robles as an important emerging wine region, and one with an affinity for the grape varieties of the Rhône Valley” (William Kelley, Wine Advocate). As the preeminent pioneer of Paso Robles, Tablas Creek has brought validity and prestige to the entire region over its 30-year history. Wine Advocate’s William Kelley continues in his 2018 report, “today, Tablas Creek’s success seems so assured that it’s easy to forget what a bold move its foundation represented in the’s vintages, produced from older vines and with the benefit of more experience, are likely to prove even more long-lived than those of yesteryear.” Today we are thrilled to unveil the newest label from Tablas Creek to our customers: the 2018 ‘Overachiever’ Grenache (that absolutely lives up to its name). For one week, we’re offering this release with special Concierge-only pricing up to 25% off case orders, bringing each bottle sub-$30.

Today Tablas Creek is owned and run jointly by the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel and the Haas family of Vineyard Brands. In 1989, the partners purchased a 120-acre property in the rugged Adelaida District of west Paso Robles, selected chiefly for its similarities to Châteauneuf du Pape: limestone soils and a favorable Mediterranean climate. They soon began their decade-long process of importing and propagating the traditional grape varieties grown at Beaucastel, which they continue to use at their own organic estate vineyard and which also provided the source material for hundreds of vineyards around the west coast. Always looking to the future, Tablas Creek achieved Biodynamic certification in 2016 and was awarded the world’s first Regenerative Organic Certification earlier this year.

While much of the Grenache grown in Tablas Creek’s vineyards is used in their popular Châteauneuf-du-Pape-style blends, exceptional vintages often allow the winery to bottle the best plots of Grenache as single-varietal wine as well. Grenache was a star of the cooler 2018 vintage in Paso, the best fruit laced with lifted fruit, lots of peppery spice, and a welcome tannic bite suggesting longevity in the cellar. Grenache from three of Tablas Creek’s oldest vineyard lots was used for today’s 2018 ‘Overachiever’; the lots were blended in June 2019 and aged in neutral oak until bottling in August 2020. The result is a stunning Grenache with bright, vibrant red fruit and spice, balanced by firm tannins that promise a decade or more of potential in the cellar. Tablas Creek can stand up to some of the biggest players in California and the Rhône Valley—don’t delay in securing your bottles today!
