SYMINGTON FAMILY ESTATES, DOURO

DOURO VALLEY, PORTUGAL

Butch and Sundance. Mulder and Scully. Bill and Ted.

Now, we’re not saying that the partnership between Bruno Prats, the former owner of Château Cos-d’Estournel in Bordeaux, and the iconic Symington family in Portugal's Douro Valley is destined to go down as one of the all-time great duos, but make no mistake about it: this is a powerhouse pairing.

As Wine Spectator once wrote of an earlier vintage, the joining of forces modulates "the power of the Douro's fruit with a Bordelaise finesse."

The 2018 vintage inarguably ranks among the very finest expressions yet from this dynamic duo. Wine Enthusiast listed it No. 42 on its Top 100 Cellar Selections of 2021, awarding 96 points and swooning over its "impressive mix of elegance, density and concentration. It's a wood-aged wine that's packed with dark plum, berry and rich tannins, which will lend well to cellaring. Drink from 2025."

The Symington family vineyards are sustainably managed with minimum intervention, and they maintain the largest area of organic vineyard in northern Portugal. The site belongs to the famed Quinta do Ataíde — a unique patch of earth, with a loamier soil than that of the rest of the Douro and growing conditions that are ideal for the production of high-quality wine. No herbicides are used (or needed), and the dryness of the micro-climate limits competing (and potentially damaging) vegetation.

That terroir is not simply present in their wines — it’s honored.

We're able to make this sublime bottling available to our Concierge Family for a best price of under $80 a bottle — a fantastic deal for a richly concentrated wine that is already showing out beautifully, and just needs a couple more years of cellaring to reach full maturity.

Prats & Symington have also collaborated on a table wine, the Post Scriptum de Chryseia. Natalie MacLean gushed over it, calling it "elegant and vibrant on the palate," and after our recent tasting, we would second that assessment, while just adding that it showed itself to be a surprisingly complex and refined wine for the price: just under $25 a bottle. A blend of Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional, with Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca for rounding and softening, it aged for 12 months in French oak. Wines of the Duoro often lead with their size, but here again we see the influence of Prats: for all its heft, it seduces with its freshness, silkiness, and ripe tannins.

Last but not least, we bring you Symington's Altano 'Rewilding' Edition 2020. For a wine of this size and price (a best price of under $16 a bottle) it has an unexpected finesse, thanks to subtly spicy tannins and a judicious use of acidity. But that's not the entire story of this wine. A portion of every purchase will go to Rewilding Portugal, a large-scale conservation project that seeks to protect biodiversity hotspots on a 120,000-hectare wildlife corridor.

We encourage you to seize upon this opportunity to support the preservation efforts of a great winemaking region — it's not often you get to drink well and do well at the same time — and to support, as well, the Prats and Symington collaboration, one of the great and enduring partnerships in the world of wine and a source, for so many of us, of such powerful, expressive wines through the years.

We'll have all three of these wines on hand for the next week, at special Concierge Family prices — so take advantage now!
