Y’all are going to want to hear this offer! I’m a proud native Texan, but I never thought I’d be able to find high-quality Single Malt whiskey made, aged, and bottled in the Lone Star State. But Amanda and Nick Swift knew it could be done and in 2012, they founded Swift Distillery in Dripping Springs, Texas with a dream of making “the best Single Malt whiskey ever tasted stateside,” and they did just that: their flagship Single Malt was awarded 95 points from Wine Enthusiast and was also named one of the Top 100 Spirits of 2015. The Swifts’ journey to crafting Texas Single Malts began many years before as the couple traveled to Scotland, Japan, and Kentucky to learn everything they could about whiskey history, production, and aging. Their dedication to only one quality—the best—has paid off, and their Single Malt collection is a testament to the couple’s unwavering passion. 
 

While many brands claim to be “handcrafted,” Swift means it. Their flagship whiskey starts with 2-row barley that is grown and malted in Scotland, mostly the Speyside region, and is then mashed, fermented, double distilled, and bottled on site in Dripping Springs. The whiskey matures first in ex-Four Roses Bourbon barrels followed by time in ex-Oloroso Sherry butts; no specific age statement is listed, but two years in barrel in Texas’ hot and humid climate is likely akin to 5+ years in the cool Scottish Highlands. This Texas Single Malt is creamy and silky on the palate, displaying notes of toasty vanilla, caramel, orange peel, ripe peaches, and the slightest hint of sandalwood. 
 

The latest release from Swift is their Sauternes-cask finished whiskey. There is an unmistakable decadence and intensity of flavor from whiskies finished in Sauternes casks, but there aren’t many available given the rarity of these barrels. The same 2-row Scottish malted barley is used for this whisky, which also ages first in ex-Bourbon barrels. The Single Malt is then transferred to Château d’Arche Sauternes casks, which the couple hand selected directly from the estate in Bordeaux. This barrel finishing gives a gloriously dessert-like profile to the whisky, which showcases flavors of honeysuckle, brown sugar, milk chocolate, and graham cracker.
