STEPHANE OGIER, 'LE TEMPS EST VENU' CÔTES DU RHÔNE

RHÔNE VALLEY, FRANCE 2019

When Jancis Robinson calls something a "delicious bargain," you better believe we spring into action.

So when the venerable wine writer spread the word about Ogier’s excellent 2018 vintage, we raced to secure our stocks of the 2019. We are happy to report that the latter is every bit as good as we had hoped—a terrific expression of the southern Rhône appellation, and at a fantastic value.

Great wine is a culmination of lots of careful, little details, and Ogier has built its reputation on being scrupulously attentive to process.

The family has lived in Ampuis, in Côte-Rôtie, for seven generations, and the scion, Stephane, who trained both in Burgundy and at stellar wineries abroad, combines a reverence for tradition, a keen palate, and an understanding that method matters.

It doesn’t hurt that the estate has been blessed with rich soils (a mix of limestone and clay), clean air, and long days of gorgeous sun.

The 2019 is 60% Grenache, 35% Syrah, and 5% Mourvèdre for rounding. The grapes were fermented in whole clusters in concrete tanks and (because Grenache doesn’t take well to oak) aged as well in concrete tanks.

What you'll find in the glass is a medium-bodied, nicely fleshy wine that, for its price, is impressively well-built, with good acidity and supple tannins. The character of southern Rhône comes through unmistakably—in the backbone of subtle spice and herbs, and in the note of wild blackberries—providing you with a connection to place you seldom find in wines at this price.

In a lively 91-point review, Wine Spectator called it a “juicy ball of anise-tinged deliciousness, with an echo of garrigue through the finish” that you should “drink now through 2025.”

Hear, hear.

This is the big, versatile red that autumn calls for—perfect for game-day chili and burgers on the grill, but I also love it with charcuterie or a cheese plate, particularly if that plate happens to be laden with ripe, melty cheeses such as Saint Andre and Taleggio.

So here's to you, Mrs. Robinson. And for all of you out there in the Concierge family, we hope the wines of Ogier prove to be a wonderful and welcome discovery. But hurry ... the word is most definitely out.
