STAETE LANDT SAUVIGNON BLANC
Duchess, Annabel, Map Maker
MARLBOROUGH, NEW ZEALAND 2017
It’s probably safe to say that everyone is familiar with New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Like it or hate it, we know it for its distinct grassy, grapefruit, and gooseberry flavors and extreme value. With its popularity skyrocketing in the early 2000s, thousands of new labels flooded into the market as if it were coming off a factory line. And the quality of most wines were…good enough?
But in the sea of large scale production, there are some who are practicing serious viticulture. Driven by a passion to showcase Marlborough’s potential to be one of the great wine regions of the world, Ruud Maasdam left the Netherlands for the Golden Triangle of Rapaura, arguably the oldest and most established appellation of Marlborough. Inspired by the original maps of New Zealand formerly known as “Staete Landt” after it was discovered by the Dutch back in 1642, Ruud began in-depth research and geological analysis of the entire vineyard, mapping out every detail. This profound understanding of the land lead to 19 different plots, each with specific varieties and clones best suited for each plot and its own unique viticultural practices. And in the winery, each plot is vinified separately and treated like its own wine until the final blend.
Far more reminiscent of Pouilly-Fume and Sancerre than what we think Marlborough is, I can’t help but be excited about the future of this region. With Staete Landt, it is clear that there is an intimate understanding of the history and terroir of this place. Today, I am thrilled to introduce the wines of Staete Landt through 3 different expressions of Sauvignon Blanc.
While there is little about Staete Landt that falls in-line with what we generally know about New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, one aspect that carries over is that relative to the quality, these wines are an outrageous value. Coupled with today’s offer for 15% off on a mixed 6 pack (2 bottles each) and 20% off on a mixed 12 pack (4 bottles each), this should be a no brainer.
